Why the M4 Still Reigns Supreme for Most Shooters

Rifle Doctrine and Gear. By Altaris Defense. October 15, 2025.

Despite the constant introduction of new platforms, calibers, and configurations, the M4 carbine and its civilian AR-15 derivatives remain the most practical general-purpose rifle for the broadest range of professional and personal defense applications. This is not nostalgia — it is an engineering and logistics argument.

The M4 platform offers the largest aftermarket parts ecosystem in firearms history, with a supply chain tested through decades of sustained military operations. Components are interchangeable across manufacturers. Institutional knowledge of the platform is deep among armorer communities, law enforcement agencies, and military units. Training programs are mature and validated.

The 5.56x45mm cartridge is optimized for the terminal performance characteristics required at military engagement ranges. Its lighter weight compared to 7.62x51mm enables higher ammunition carriage per operator. The direct impingement gas system, while debated, provides excellent reliability when properly maintained and correctly configured for barrel length and ammunition type.

Platform alternatives — piston-driven systems, larger calibers, different configurations — offer real advantages in specific operational contexts. But for the general-purpose operator who needs a reliable, maintainable, logistically sustainable rifle platform, the M4/AR-15 remains unmatched. Related: NGSW Deep Dive | AR-15 Barrel Length Guide
