Choosing the Right AR-15 Barrel Length: Industry Insights

AR-15 barrel length selection involves direct trade-offs between muzzle velocity, gas system dwell time, weight, maneuverability, and sound signature. There is no universal optimum, only the configuration best matched to the intended mission profile.

Short Barrels: 10.3 to 11.5 Inches

Pistol-caliber-adjacent configurations used in CQB and vehicle operations. Velocity loss with 5.56mm is significant. Terminal performance at extended range is compromised. Suppressor integration is common. Gas system timing and port sizing become critical at these lengths.

14.5 to 16 Inches: The General-Purpose Sweet Spot

The M4 military configuration at 14.5 inches and the civilian 16-inch minimum represent the most widely validated general-purpose AR-15 barrel lengths. Mid-length gas systems at 16 inches provide improved dwell time, reduced carrier velocity, and better felt recoil management compared to carbine-length gas at the same barrel length. This configuration balances velocity, reliability, and handling for the broadest range of applications.

18 to 20 Inches: Precision and Velocity

Longer barrels extract additional velocity from 5.56mm and larger calibers, improving both terminal performance and long-range ballistic coefficient utilization. The 20-inch government profile was the original M16 specification. For precision applications in .223 Wylde or 6.5 Creedmoor bolt-action platforms, 24 to 26 inches is common. Weight and maneuverability trade-offs are the limiting factors.
